18-0! SA raining goals and drama in FFA Cup

Some massive scores, a cracking showdown between two ex-NSL clubs and penalty-shootout drama highlighted a breathtaking round of Westfield Preliminary round matches in South Australia over the weekend.

The highly anticipated clash was between Adelaide City and West Adelaide and it turned out to be a rout for Damien Mori’s side.

City, who eliminated West Adelaide last year on their incredible run to quarter-finals, prevailed 4-0 thanks to braces from Anthony Costa and El Qioin El Walli.

Costa opened the scoring 10 minutes before the break and then El Walli doubled the advantage 18 minutes into the second half.

The pair both scored again inside the last 10 minutes to add some gloss to the scoreline and ensure a crushing win for the home side.

It was raining goals for both Croydon Kings and the Adelaide Comets, who both hit double figures as they cruised into the last eight in SA.

The Kings smashed home 18 goals in their demolition of Apollo SC, while the Comets got to 11 as they shut-out Unley Old Scholars.

In other results, Para Hills survived a gripping penalty shootout to edge past Modbury Jets.

After scores were locked at 2-2 after extra-time, the Knights held their nerve to win 7-6 on penalties.

Defending PS4 SA NPL champions MetroStars were too good for South Adelaide Panthers 3-1, White City edged past Salisbury United 4-2 and the Pirates beat the Raiders 2-1.

The draw for the quarter-finals in South Australia will be held later today (Monday).

There are also games in Western Australia on Monday, with last season’s round of 32 representatives Bayswater City in action against Inglewood United.

Perth take on second division Fremantle City, Sorrento host Stirling Lions, Joondalup City travel to Mandurah and Balcatta take on Subiaco in the pick of the other games.
