Berries say bring on Fitzy’s FFA Cup champs!

Bankstown Berries want to face reigning FFA Cup champions Melbourne City in the Round of 16 – and there’s a special reason why.

AS IT HAPPENED: Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32: MD1

The Berries progressed from the Round of 32 on match day one on Wednesday night after defeating MetroStars from SA 2-1.

And with City facing a minnow in Peninsula Power it’s highly likely the Hyundai A-League club will also progress in the Round of 32.

EWERT’S SPECIAL REASON

As it turns out, Berries stalwart Kyle Ewert’s girlfriend’s brother is City star Nick Fitzgerald.

It has some of the Berries hoping for the Cityzens from Melbourne in the next round.

“I’m absolutely over the moon,” substitute keeper Chad Taylor told www.theffacup.com.au

“It was a great win. Even though I wasn’t sure I should’ve even been on the bench.

“Seems some of the guys want to face City in the next round.”

Taylor injured his quad two weeks ago and was doubtful before the game.

But he was thrust into action early in the first half after the starting keeper felt unwell midway through the first half.

“There is good spirit in the team and that’s probably one of the best victory songs in the country,” he said, referring to the Berries’ stirring rendition of the Depeche Mode classic, “Just Can’t Get Enough”.

BRING ON THE SKY BLUES

Berries player-manager Perry Moustakas told Fox Sports City wasn’t his ideal opponent in the next round. Instead he was wishing for another big club.

“The FFA Cup is such a wonderful experience. And to make the round of 16 is a dream come true,” he said.

“Sydney FC would be beautiful.”
