Canberra's incredible Cup night

Capital Football began its Westfield FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds on Tuesday night with 14 goals scored and an upset as the Cup also continued nationally.

In Canberra, ANU scored the bulk of those 14 goals as they made a clear statement of intent with a 9-2 drubbing of Canberra City.

There was also an upset in the nation’s capital as State League 3 club Brindabella Blues edged past Goulburn Strikers of State League 1 by 2-1.

Meanwhile, up in NSW, another major shock was narrowly averted as PS4 NPL 2 side Bankstown City Lions survived a scare against Eastern Suburbs Association side Coogee United.

Coogee led 1-0 at the break before Bankstown turned it around early in the second half but a late strike sent the match to extra-time, where the Lions emerged 3-2 winners.

State League One outfit Hawkesbury City eliminated Football South Coast side Woonona FC 2-0 in a tight contest at David Bertenshaw Field.

There were three games in Victoria with an extra-time goal from Sean McIlroy helping Kingston City to a 2-1 win over Green Gully.

Melbourne Knights eased past Sunbury United 3-0, while Bendigo City also enjoyed a big win, disposing of Brunswick City 4-1.

And in Queensland Peninsula Power knocked out Mt Gravatt Hawks 2-1, Stratford Dolphins defeated Southside Comets 7-3 up north, while Broadbeach United prevailed in a seven goal thriller against Magic United and Mudgeeraba defeated Murwillumbah 4-1.
