Cup wrap: Tuggies triumph, Avondale edge shootout

Tuggeranong United moved a step closer to a return to the Westfield FFA Cup round of 32 while there was penalty shootout-drama in Victoria in preliminary round action on Tuesday night.

There were five matches played around the country last night with Tuggies – who made the last 16 last year – the biggest winners.

They made the perfect start against Woden Weston FC with Tommy Ruiz scoring inside the first minute but the home side levelled things up before the break.

Toowoomba Derby set to heat up the Cup!

But United wouldn’t be denied after the break.

A brace from Zac Munster and further goals to Jonno Turek and Sean Murphy made for a comfortable 5-2 victory.

Also in the nation’s capital, Olaide Ynka-Kehinde’s goal was enough for ANU to edge past Queanbeyan 1-0.

There was a thriller in Victoria as Port Melbourne and Avondale went through to penalties after a 2-2 draw in a pulsating 120 minutes.

All the goals came in the first 20 minutes as Port came from behind twice with goals from Kamal Ibrahim and Erhan Yalaz.

But they couldn’t hold their nerve in the shootout, their final kick crashing onto the crossbar to hand Avondale a 6-5 win on penalties.

In Queensland, there was extra-time needed to separate North Pine FC and Bayside United, as James Fairgrieve’s 109th minute strike handing Pine a 1-0 win.

And a brace by Paul Rogan has seen Port Darwin FC scrape past 1st Brigade 2-1 in the Northern Territory.

Rogan opened the scoring early in the second half when he ran onto a through ball and smashed a shot through the hands of ‘keeper Morgan Taylor.

Brigade equalized through Daniel Ciogu 17 minutes from the end before Rogan had the last say in the final minute with a powerful strike from just inside the box.

There are more games on tonight [Wednesday] in NSW, Queensland, ACT and Northern Territory.
