Down to last eight in the west

There were goals galore in Round 5 of Western Australia's Westfield FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds with the final eight teams now confirmed.

A ten-man Cockburn City were one of the teams to progress, with a late winner edging out South West Phoenix 3-2 in an absorbing tie at Dalmatinac Park.

Cockburn coach Scott Miller said his team is driven by their appearance in the FFA Cup Round of 32 last year.

“To experience that Australia-wide stage was really fun last year,” he said.

“The boys loved that bit of exposure. We were obviously lucky to get a trip away last year and I’m sure they’d love to have another crack this year.

“It’s a very different competition. If I was analysing it like our league games, I’d probably be pulling my hair out, but it’s about winning and getting through and we showed great character to do so.”

Miller was also pleased his side bounced back quickly after the weekend’s defeat to Stirling.

“As a coach you normally have a week to think about things, but to have a game three days later was good,” he said.

“We switched the boys onto this game quickly and it was good to get the late winner tonight, which is always nice.”

Cockburn made a quick start to things with a goal inside four minutes as Harry O’Brien crossed in from the right and Daniel Robinson got across his marker to poke the ball home.
