Drama, upsets and goals in Westfield FFA Cup

Penalty shoot-out drama, big upsets and plenty of goals highlighted another massive weekend of Westfield FFA Cup preliminary round action.

It was in Western Australia where plenty of the drama happened with more than 20 matches played across the state.

There was a thriller between Cracovia and Emerald, with the former emerging 5-4 winners on penalties after a 2-2 draw after extra-time.

Wanneroo City also needed a shootout to overcome Ellenbrook United after they also played out a 2-2 draw.

And at Princess Reserve it was amateur side Kingsley FC who pulled off a huge shock, disposing of semi-pro outfit Balga 2-1.

Gwelup Croatia were the biggest winners of the weekend crushing Kelmscott Ross 11-1, while Joondalup United (9-0 over Olympic Heat), Shamrock Rovers Perth (8-1 over Perth Saints), Ashfield (4-0 over Hamersley Rovers), Rockingham City (4-0 over Maccabi) and North Perth United (4-1 over East Fremantle) also had comfortable victories.

It was an historic occasion in Darwin as the Northern Territory were involved in their first-ever Westfield FFA Cup matches.

There was no joy for the youngest club in the competition in Shamrock Rovers, who were beaten 4-1 by Casuarina, while the result of Darwin Olympic and University Azzurri is up in the air with Olympic making a fourth substitution in their 3-2 win.

In Queensland there was just the one match as Southside United edged out Clinton SC 1-0.

There is a whole heap of midweek ties to be played in NSW this week with all the NPL Men’s 1 clubs to make their first appearances of the year.

Mark Rudan’s Sydney United 58 – who were eliminated in the round of 16 by Sydney FC last season – take on APIA Leichhardt Tigers in the pick of the fixtures.

Fellow round of 16 side Sydney Olympic travel to play Waverley Old Boys, Marconi take on Sutherland Sharks and Fraser Park host Bonnyrigg White Eagles in some other eye-catching match-ups.
