Goal hero Naumoff plays down brilliant brace

Teenage Sydney FC hero Christopher Naumoff says the result – not his two sensational goals – was all that mattered after the Sky Blues progressed to the Westfield FFA Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night.

Naumoff broke Sydney United 58 hearts with two incredible strikes either side of the break – and Stjepan Paric’s equalizer - to help the Sky Blues to a 3-1 win in front of more than 8000 fans at Sydney United Sports Centre.

The 19-year-old has gone almost unnoticed in pre-season as coach Graham Arnold recruited a host of big-name attacking talent but it was Naumoff who shone most brightly in a man-of-the-match performance.

“It’s always positive to score goals but the main aim is to do it for the team,” Naumoff told Fox Sports.

“We’ve done that tonight, we got the result and now we’re progressing through to the next stage.”

The quarter-final draw was conducted immediately after full-time of all four matches on Tuesday night, with Sydney to host fellow Hyundai A-League side Adelaide United in the last eight.

“As a team we’re very confident,” Naumoff declared of his side’s chances of winning the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup.

“Week in, week out we always work out what we need to do and of course we’re very confident we can win any match.”
