Hume City hero's 'spectacular' FFA Cup night

Hume City hero and goal-scorer Marcus Schroen said it was his side’s belief and character which sparked his side’s epic 4-3 extra-time win over Brisbane Strikers in the Westfield FFA Cup round of 32 on Wednesday night.

The Victorian side looked to be going out when they conceded in the final minute of normal time to trail 2-1 before Schroen equalized in stoppage time.

Schroen then dragged Hume off the canvas again in extra-time after they fell behind 3-2 before an own goal from Greig Henslee in the 120th minute snatched an incredible victory.

Marcus Schroen of Hume City FC celebrates after scoring against Brisbane Strikers.

“It was quite a spectacular night,” an ecstatic Schroen told www.theffacup.com.au.

FFA Cup wrap: epic drama on opening night

“We thought we were out of it at one stage but that’s the character of the boys to keep on fighting on two occasions to come back at 2-2 and to 3-3 as well.

“When your 2-1 down with a minute to go you just have to gamble. I know the boys never stop believing so it’s credit to them."

Hume now moves into the last 16 and Schroen says he doesn’t care who they draw, confident they can emulate Bentleigh Greens run last year.

“I’m happy to take whatever comes our way, whether it’s an A-League team we’ll be ready and up for the challenge or if it’s an interstate trip we’ll be up for that too,” he said.

“Bentleigh went all the way to the semis last year and I can’t see why we can’t go that far or even further.”
