Queensland clubs set to attack in the Cup

Queensland’s two clubs in the Westfield FFA Cup have some of the hottest goal machines in the country and are set to employ an ‘attack is the best form of defence’ policy tonight when the round of 32 kicks off.

Brisbane Strikers and Olympic FC will fly their state’s flag on the national stage tonight in the Westfield FFA Cup round of 32.

The Strikers travel to Newcastle to take on the Broadmeadow Magic in a clash that will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 3 from 7pm, while Olympic FC host former NSL giants Melbourne Knights.

It’s a huge test for both clubs and they have vowed to go all out and attack their opponents - and why not.

The Strikers, currently third in the NPL, have shown they are an outfit that likes to go forward and with in-form striker Matt Thurtell in the line-up it’s not hard to see why.

Thurtell has scored more than 100 goals in his five seasons with the club and is in strong form this season, thanks largely to the service of Greg King, Scot Coulson and Jheison Macauce.

In an added boost for the side, skipper Jonti Richter appears set to shrug off a foot injury to play some part and add another dimension down the right wing.

Meanwhile Olympic FC appears to be peaking at just the right time for their date with FFA Cup destiny, having won four straight matches locally on the back of their enterprising play.

Coach Jim Bellas has often been willing to forgo clean sheets as his side go in search of big wins and it’s paying off as the defending champions have risen to second in their domestic competition.

They employ an ultra-attacking 4-3-3 formation with a strike-force of Tim Smits, Danny Byrne and Reuben Way who are all in strong goal-scoring form.

Way in particular is in cracking form with a better than goal a game record this season while Byrne notched a hat-trick in a 5-1 route of Moreton Bay last Friday.

Whatever the outcome for these two teams from the Sunshine State, it promises to be one thrilling ride to kick off the round of 32 in the inaugural FFA Cup.
