Queensland Cup wrap

There were two big upsets last night in Queensland as two former Round of 32 entrants were eliminated by lower ranked teams in the Westfield FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds.

Olympic FC were eliminated by a ruthless Moggill FC 4-1 while Gold Coast City (former Palm Beach SC) were also sent packing after being edged out by Surfers 1-0.

Northern Fury won their first game of the year in any competition as they beat Rebels FC up north and Lions FC (third tier Brisbane Premier League club that made Round of 16 last year) took care of business against Western Pride who are still searchig for their first ever Westfield FFA Cup victory.

Meanwhile, Southside Eagles won an extra time thriller over Acacia Ridge FC.

Below is a rundown on a host of last night's Queensland Cup ties.

Redlands Utd v Pine Rivers United

Redlands are through the next round of the Westfield FFA Cup following a workmanlike 2-1 win over Pine Rivers United at Wendy Allison Park.

Redlands were far from their glittering best against their fourth-tier opposition despite holding a two goal advantage early in the second half courtesy of Nicolas Bechar and Tyler Brayley-Combe.

The hosts pulled a goal back from the penalty spot shortly after the hour via Samuel West but from thereon were effectively stifled as Redlands saw out the result.

Olympic FC v Moggill

Olympic FC are out of the Westfield FFA Cup for 2016 after being stunned 4-1 by unheralded local side Moggill FC at Goodwin Park.

Playing at the scene of their famous 2014 victory in the same competition over Melbourne Knights, Olympic were humbled and out-played by their fourth tier opponents.

Samuel Chesterfield scored twice to add to Kisuke Uga’s penalty spot opener to all but seal the win just after the hour for the Capital League One outfit.

Two late goals from Jonathon Bagley has delivered Northern Fury their first win of 2016 – downing local community club Rebels FC 2-0 in the Westfield FFA Cup.

Fury saw the better of the contest for extended periods against their third-tier opponents but clear cut chances proved scarce before Bagley headed home twice from set-pieces entering the final quarter hour.

The result marks Fury’s first competitive win of 2016 – and first clean sheet - following an eight match losing streak in PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues.
