Queensland's Preliminary Rounds done and dusted

Moreton Bay United
-
Queensland’s Westfield FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds kicked off in early February as clubs dared to dream of glory on the national stage. Now, only four teams from the Sunshine State's semi professional ranks remain in the hunt.

Moreton Bay United, Peninsula Power, FNQ Heat and Gold Coast City will all feature in the Round of 32 draw, to be held on Thursday 29 June. Read on to find out how they made the cut.

METRO

Brisbane Olympic 2 – 4 Moreton Bay United
Goodwin Park, Brisbane

Brisbane Olympic took to the field at Goodwin Park as strong favourites, thanks to their home advantage and superior PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland form.

Olympic even took a 2-1 lead shortly after the break, but Moreton Bay rattled off the final three goals to secure a famous 4-2 win and their first entry into the Round of 32.

Riley Campbell has scored 11 PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland goals this season and the Jets danger man again played an important role for his side, scoring a brace to lead Moreton Bay to a come-from-behind win.

Peninsula Power

Grange Thistle 0 – 3 Peninsula Power
Lanham Park, Brisbane

Brisbane’s other qualification spot was decided in a more routine manner as Peninsula Power pulled away from Grange Thistle to win 3-0 and qualify for the Round of 32 for the first time.

The match hung in the balance until Dean Briggs’ beautiful half-volley cracked the deadlock just before the half hour mark.

Briggs scored again early in the second half to further seize control of the match, before Charles Mendy finished a one-on-one chance to put the tie to bed.

NORTHERN REGIONAL

FNQ FC Heat 6 – 1 Magpies FC
Endeavour Park, Cairns

FNQ FC Heat have a perfect Round of 32 qualification record, and it never looked like 2017 would be the exception as Chris Sullivan’s double led the home side to a 6-1 win over Magpies FC.

Heat led 3-0 at half-time and continued to bang in the goals in the second 45. Magpies pulled it back to 4-1 with 15 minutes remaining, but a late Heat flurry saw off the danger.

Gold Coast City FC

SOUTHERN REGIONAL

Gold Coast City 5 – 1 Caloundra FC
Duncan McKenna Field, Gold Coast

Gold Coast City coach Grae Piddick made history when his side dismissed Caloundra FC 5-1, becoming the first coach to qualify for the Round of 32 three times with one club.

Piddick was not the main story on Sunday night however, as striker Jarrod Kyle stole the show with a barnstorming four-goal effort.

Kyle’s haul adds to the seven he has already scored in the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland, and makes the frontman one of the most in-form forwards in the state.
