Record night for the Westfield FFA Cup

Wednesday night’s Westfield FFA Cup Final 2016 set new records in more ways than one as the aura around the magic of the Cup continues to rise.

Melbourne City FC’s 1-0 win over Sydney FC in this year’s showpiece event may have brought the Hyundai A-League club its first silverware, but there were also other records that tumbled on a memorable night at AAMI Park.

The crowd of 18,751 in attendance set a new mark for the highest attendance at a Westfield FFA Cup match, eclipsing the previous record of 16,124 which came at the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup Final between Adelaide United and Perth Glory at Coopers Stadium in 2014.

The high level of interest also resonated around the country with an average of 157,000 people watching the drama unfold on FOX SPORTS. This figure was also the highest rating for a Westfield FFA Cup match.

The Westfield FFA Cup Final 2016 also featured three radio broadcasts with ABC Radio, SEN and EON Sports all taking the call as Melbourne City FC were crowned Westfield FFA Cup winners, which saw Tim Cahill win his first Cup Final after being on the losing side in three previous Cup Finals (two FA Cup Finals and one Chinese Cup Final).

Both sets of supporters, particularly those that flew down from Sydney, should also be applauded for the fantastic colour and noise that reverberated around the stadium to create an atmosphere that only football can provide.

After the buzz around the Final, the Westfield FFA Cup can undoubtedly stake a claim to have truly captured the imagination of the Australian sporting public and be entrenched in the Australian sporting landscape.

Silence.

Bring on the magic of the Cup in 2017!
