Red Devils cause shock as Greens exit FFA Cup

Last season’s semi-finalists Bentleigh Greens have been bundled out of the Westfield FFA Cup by former Victory striker James Robinson's Ballarat Red Devils in a huge shock.

On a massive Wednesday night with more than 30 matches across five states, last year’s fairytale story from Bentleigh were upset 4-3 by the plucky Red Devils.

The eye-catching result was courtesy of a sensational performance from Michael Trigger and Simon Murphy both bagging braces for the NPL League One outfit.

"It's football, it's the FFA Cup, it's what dreams are made of," Red Devils coach James Robinson told The Courier newspaper.

“You can't take away from it. It's a great victory."

But that wasn't the only fantastic Cup yarn out of Victoria.

There’s another giant-killing run emerging out of Victoria as sixth-tier Caulfield United Cobras advanced with a penalty-shootout win over Old Scotch SC.

After scores were tied at 1-1 after extra-time, the Cobras were faultless from 12-yards to win 5-4 on penalties and just two wins away from the final 32.

Elsewhere in Victoria, Oakleigh Cannons also needed penalties to see off Richmond, while South Melbourne flexed their muscles with an 8-0 thrashing of North Sunshine Eagles.

South Springvale - last season's heroes after their own fabulous Cup run to the last 16, stayed alive with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Box Hill, Essendon Royals edged out Moreland Zebras 1-0 and North Geelong Warriors beat Pascoe Vale 3-1.
