Reds now desperate to lift silverware

Adelaide United defender Nigel Boogaard says the club’s desperation to land some long-awaited silverware was the driving force between their Westfield FFA Cup semi-final win over Central Coast on Wednesday night.

The Reds will meet Perth Glory in the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup final on Tuesday, December 16 after a well-deserved 3-2 victory over the Mariners at Coopers Stadium.

A brace to Sergio Cirio either side of a powerful finish from Ajax Amsterdam target Awer Mabil ensured Adelaide are just one win away from securing the season’s first trophy.

“It’s been a while since the club’s been in a final and some silverware would be great for the club,” Boogaard told Fox Sports.

“I haven’t had that chance since I’ve been here so hopefully the boys can get across the line.”

While it was another stunning team performance which got the Reds over the line, Cirio continued his love-affair with the competition with another eye-catching display.

The Spaniard has scored in every round of the Westfield FFA Cup to sit as the competition’s joint top-scorer with five goals from four matches.

“He’s quality. I don’t think he’s missed a training session since he’s been here,” Boogaard said of Cirio.

“He just loves it and can finish.

“It’s great to have someone like him in the team.

Asked about the prospect of hosting the final against the Glory, Boogaard said: “The crowd here are massive for us and it would be great to have it here and hopefully we can get a few more supporters in the stand.”
