In the penultimate weekend of action before the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 kicks off on July 27, here's how the eight opening night teams did.
Pascoe Vale 2 Hume City 1
A disappointing loss for Hume at Vale's CB Smith Reserve with the home side 2-0 up inside the first 20 minutes. Hume's Kym Harris, assisted by Nick Hegarty, grabbed a late goal but it was too little too late for the boys from the ABD Stadium. Hume will face Marconi Stallions in the Round of 32 at home.
Fraser Park 3 Marconi Stallions 1
After an incredible 4-4 draw last week, the Stallions couldn’t find a win this week, losing to Fraser Park.
Parramatta FC 0 Sydney United58 2
United travelled to Melita Stadium on the weekend and after taking a 2-0 lead at the break through Glen Trifiro and Chris Payne, Mark Rudan’s men were able to hold onto their lead in the second half to maintain their fine form in NSW. United will face Blacktown City in the opening night of the FFA Cup Round of 32 in a real western Sydney derby.
Wollongong Wolves 2 Blacktown City 3
City was on the south coast of NSW and it was a cracker. City took a 3-1 lead into the break thanks to Antelmi, Macura and Major. And they held on against a gallant Wolves who scored a second late on.
Hamilton Olympic FC 3 Edgeworth Eagles FC 1
A huge clash in NNSW saw Olympic back on top of the league after this win. Swan, Goodchild (2) scored for the home side. Aden Gardner with the Eagles’ reply.
*Far North Queensland Heat did not play, as this was a designated catch-up week.
Brisbane Strikers 1 Redlands 0
Brisbane Strikers, who make the trip to face Darwin Rovers FC on the opening night, have moved to within one point of the league leaders in NPL QLD after holding out Redlands United 1-0 at Cleveland Showgrounds. Fraser Hills struck the decisive blow in the first-half, converting a cutback from Hiroki Omori inside half an hour for his seventh goal of the season.
Darwin Rovers FC 3 Casuarina FC 4
At the Darwin football stadium, a seven-goal thriller saw Rovers lose out to Casuarina just a week after Rovers edged Hellenic in another seven-goal thriller. Rovers held a 3-2 lead against Casuarina but the northern suburbs outfit powered home to score twice in the second term in this entertaining Darwin's Men's Premier League clash.
