WA's Gulls flying high after FFA Cup triumph

Sorrento FC’s coach Jamie Harnwell says the sky’s the limit for the Seagulls of Sorrento FC after they knocked out Canberra Olympic on Wednesday night in Perth.

AS IT HAPPENED: Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32: MD1

The Gulls progressed from the Round of 32 on match day one after defeating the ACT club 1-0 at a wet Percy Doyle reserve.

And the former Glory hero has high hopes for his side after they edged the side that enjoyed a fairytale run in last season’s Cup.

GREAT TUSSLE OUT WEST

“It was a great game. And Canberra were superb going forward,” he told Fox Sports.

“We had a couple of disallowed goals, so tonight had everything.

“Thankfully we got the win.”

The winner came from big Englishman Sean Canham who directed his header past the keeper for the only goal of the game.

“The pitch didn’t help us too much but in Cup games you need grit and determination and the boys showed that in spades.”

FIRST WA TEAM THROUGH

Harnwell conceded that second goal would’ve been a handy buffer.

“But the last few minutes was quite nervy and the keeper pulled off some worldie saves and it’s all ended well.

“Can’t wait for the next round to see who we draw.”

The other WA teams in the Round of 32 are Western Knights and Perth Glory.

The A-League club face Heidelberg next week in Melbourne and the Knights are on the Gold Coast a week later to face City.
