WA Cup preview: Ashfield v Hamersley

There are some intriguing Cup games set for the West, here's a preview of one of this weekend's clashes between Ashfield and Hamersley Rovers.

State League Division One side Ashfield have set a lofty goal ahead of their Westfield FFA Cup round-three clash against Amateur Premier Division team Hamersley Rovers at Ashfield Sports Club on Saturday.

While wary of the Hamersley threat, Ashfield coach Paul Dundo said the club was determined to make the most of the FFA Cup concept.

"We've entered the FFA Cup to progress as far as we can to possibly give the boys an opportunity to play against A-League opposition," Dundo said.

"It's going to be difficult because there are a lot of good teams in the competition but that's what we're aiming for."

The goal might appear a long way off but Ashfield's progress to the final of the Cool Ridge Cup two seasons ago is evidence of their capacity to cope with knockout football.

If they can progress as far in this year's FFA Cup, they will be rewarded with a place in the Round of 32 when Hyundai A-League teams enter the competition.

"The FFA Cup is a really exciting concept and when you look at last year's competition there were some fantastic fairy tale stories," Dundo said.

Ashfield were unbeaten in the recent State League Night Series competition but missed out on a semi-finals berth after drawing with Amateur side North Perth United.

Dundo said it had been an important lesson of the capability of teams from the Amateur ranks and Ashfield could not afford to expect anything other than a tough encounter against Hamersley.

"We'll be missing a few players but we'll put out a competitive side and we won't be taking Hamersley lightly," he said.

Ashfield will be without some key players through injury, including last season's player of the year Ruben Tristao.

At Hyundai Stadium, All Flags State League Division One sides Mandurah City and Gosnells City will go head-to-head in a repeat of their Night Series semi-final of three weeks ago.
