Westfield FFA Cup QF preview: Heidelberg v Adelaide United

Heidelberg United will be chasing another ‘cupset’ when they host in-form Hyundai A-League outfit Adelaide United in the Westfield FFA Cup Quarter-Finals on Wednesday night.

Here's all you need to know about this intriguing Quarter-Final clash.

When and where

Wednesday 13 September

Olympic Village

7.30pm kick-off

How they got there

Heidelberg United had to negotiate four fixtures to even make the round-of-32.

They had wins over Moreland Zebras FC (4-0), Knox City FC (6-1), Kingston City FC (3-1) and Northcote City FC (2-0) to progress to the main draw.

Once there, they started their giant-killing with a 1-0 victory over Hyundai A-League side Perth Glory and earned their place in the last eight with a penalty shoot-out win over Sydney United 58.

Meantime, a rare Michael Marrone goal gave Adelaide United a 1-0 victory over fellow Hyundai A-League club Newcastle in their round-of-32 outing.

Marco Kurz's men then had an extremely impressive 3-0 win over Melbourne Victory to earn their spot in the pot for the quarter-final draw.

Recent form

Heidelberg United met Bentleigh Greens on Saturday in the NPL Victoria Grand Final.

A tight contest was won 2-1 by Bentleigh Greens in extra time.

Adelaide United played a behind-closed-doors friendly against Melbourne City last week.

In difficult weather conditions, the Reds prevailed 2-1 in a game of three 40-minute thirds, through a penalty from George Blackwood and a last-gasp goal from Jordan O'Doherty.

What they said

George Katsakis (Heidelberg United coach)

“It's a huge challenge for us, but we showed with the way we played against Perth and the mentality we took into that game that at our best we can give these teams a game.

“We are delighted to get such a big club as Adelaide.

“They won the A-League the season before last and they have some excellent players.

“It's a great test for my players and I want to reward the boys who have got us this far.”

Nikola Mileusnic (Adelaide United striker)

“Heidelberg will be up for it.

“I know when I played in NPL sides, even if it was a friendly against an A-League team, it's a massive game and a chance to show what you can do and what you've got.

“Heidelberg won't be a walk in the park, you'll see a good game.”
