Melbourne City thumped a sorry Wellington Phoenix outfit 5-1 to breeze into the FFA Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

A frenetic first half at AAMI Park saw hosts City race into a 3-0 lead courtesy of Aaron Mooy's penalty, a Harry Novillo effort from range and another spot kick converted by debutant Bruno Fornaroli.

Wellington threatened to wrest back some of the momentum when Roy Krishna lashed home yet another penalty - the third in the space of 16 minutes – with City having lost danger-man Novillo to a suspected hamstring injury.

But John van 't Schip's side restored their three-goal buffer when Robert Koren turned home Stefan Zinni's cross five minutes before the half-time break.

They were at it again early in the second half, Wade Dekker netting his first City goal on his competitive debut following good work from Mooy and Fornaroli in the build-up.

A nightmare outing for the visitors was summed up when they failed to claim a consolation goal in the 87th minute, Krishna failing to convert from the fourth penalty of the game.
