Westfield FFA Cup QF preview: Sydney FC v Melbourne City

In a rematch of last year’s final, Sydney FC will be eyeing a piece of revenge when they host Melbourne City in the Westfield FFA Cup Quarter-Finals on Wednesday night.

Here's everything you need to know about this eye-catching last-eight clash.

When and where

Wednesday 13 September

Leichhardt Oval

7.30pm kick-off

How they got there

Goals from Stefan Mauk and Bruno Fornaroli late in each half helped City see off a stubborn Peninsula Power in the round-of-32.

The Cup holders were then run close by Hakoah Sydney City East, eventually reaching the quarter-finals with a 3-2 win.

The Sky Blues opened their campaign with an 8-0 thrashing of Darwin Rovers with Bobo scoring four goals.

The Brazilian striker was again on the scoresheet in the round-of-16 as Sydney FC eased past Blacktown Berries 3-0.

Recent form

Melbourne City played 120 minutes against Adelaide United in a behind-closed-doors friendly last week.

Stefan Mauk scored City's goal in a 2-1 loss in wet conditions.

Sydney FC's most recent outing also ended in defeat with the Sky Blues going down 2-1 to fellow Hyundai A-League side Newcastle over the weekend.

However, coach Graham Arnold took the opportunity to give his entire squad a run, making ten changes at half-time.

Cup history

This will be the third meeting between these two sides in the four years of the Westfield FFA Cup.

In last year's final, Tim Cahill's header early in the second half gave City the silverware.

Two years earlier, two Ali Abbas penalties in extra-time saw the Sky Blues win 3-1 in a round-of-32 clash.

What they said

Graham Arnold (Sydney FC coach)

“I was really excited when we got Melbourne City in the draw because we've been playing NPL clubs, with no disrespect, and we need to be tested in the preseason.

“We've been performing probably around 50 percent and now we need to step up and we will on Wednesday night.”

Luke Brattan (Melbourne City midfielder)

“Last year we got called soft a lot.

“Our mentality has changed. We're a lot fitter and a lot stronger mentally.

“We're working on being aggressive in defence and keeping the ball when we can.

“Not a lot is changing, but it's about mentality.”
