Greens rode their luck: Wallace

Bentleigh Greens star Wayne Wallace admits his side rode their luck but says it a massive achievement for the club to progress to the last 16 of the Westfield FFA Cup.

On an evening of shocks in Tuesday night’s round of 32 action, the Greens got the job done on the road against Blacktown City winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from David Stirton.

Despite being pinned back for much of the first half, the visitors produced a moment of quality five minutes before the break as Stirton headed home from close range.

The Victorians then held on in the second half to register an historic win and go into the draw for the round of 16 in September.

“It was pretty tough to be honest,” Wallace told

“The first 15 it was hard to pass the ball. We started to pick it up 20 (minutes) before the half and then managed to get the goal.

“We thought we’d come out and pass the ball about for a bit but  we didn’t really touch the ball in the second half.

“We pretty much lumped it and were probably lucky to get a win out of it but it’s all the same and we’re through.”

Bentleigh could now face an Hyundai A-League club when the draw for the next round is conducted later this month.

But after making it this far, Wallace said he doesn’t care who they are pitted against on their chase for national glory.

“Maybe it would be good just to get the NPL team and move on to the next round,” he said.

“Either fixture will be good for the club. To get a home fixture against an A-League club would be the same…massive.”
