Best moments of FFA Cup 2019: McBreen’s wonderstrike against the Jets

There were a clutch of jaw-dropping goals scored throughout the FFA Cup 2019 and one of the best of them was scored by former Hyundai A-League star Daniel McBreen.

In one of the standout fixtures of the Round of 16, McBreen’s Edgeworth Eagles were pitted against fellow Northern NSW side and Hyundai A-League outfit Newcastle Jets.

It was a unique fixture for McBreen, who works for the Jets as one of their youth team coaches.

But there was no sentiment towards his employers from the 42-year-old striker, who scored a goal that will live long in the memory.

The Eagles went behind early on through a goal from the Jets’ Panama international striker Abdiel Arroyo but McBreen wasted little time levelling things up.

Only eight minutes later, the former Central Coast Mariners Championship winner forgot about the calf injury that had kept him sidelined for a month, took aim and hit a thunderbolt.

McBreen swooped on a loose ball 35 metres from goal and his shot finished in the top corner of the net.

“I just saw Lewi [Jets goalkeeper Lewis Italiano] standing off his line early doors and I thought ‘if anything drops I’m just going to have a hit’,” McBreen said at the time.

“It went in top corner so I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

The Jets went on to claim the battle of the Hunter, 5-1, and book their place in the last eight of the FFA Cup - but one moment is etched in the minds of the viewers forever.
