The epic FFA Cup Round of 32 clash between Sydney Olympic and A-League outfit Sydney FC set for this Wednesday evening will be one night the Burgess brothers Darcy and Max will not forget in a long time as the two go head to head at Belmore Sports Ground.
For Darcy, the 23-year-old was eagerly anticipating the match-up against older brother and ace midfielder Max, a first ever in the Burgess household history.
“I’m really looking forward to playing him,” Darcy stated to Football NSW.
“I think it’ll definitely be a bit strange once it actually comes around, but it should be a really special experience.
“We’ve never faced off against each other in a real game, only in training matches when he was at Olympic and in the backyard of course, so this only adds to what will be a huge night for both of us and our clubs.”
The Burgess household will be split come Wednesday, but Darcy stated that both mum and dad would be barracking for both of the boys.
“I think mum and dad will be pretty neutral, it’s a win win for them, they can’t lose.”
The two brothers spent a considerable amount of time together and were part of Olympic’s golden 2018 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s season, a year which saw the Blues clinch both the Premiership and Championship, a season the dynamic duo would long remember for the rest of their lives.
“Words cannot describe how special that season was when we won the double.
“We had a great group of players, it really was an unforgettable year for us.”
Growing up, Darcy would look up to Max as a footballer and his special bond with his brother has continued to kick on ever since.
“We were never competitive growing up.
“Of course, it would get competitive when we’d play two touch or foot tennis but outside of that we were never competing with each other.
“He’s always been my inspiration and has really guided me as a player and a person, I wouldn’t be who I am without him.”
Brotherly love will however be pushed aside as the two will lock horns with a round of 16 FFA Cup spot up for grabs, something both Olympic and the Sky Blues would love nothing more.
“We definitely think we can win this.
“Training has been really good, and all the boys are looking sharp.
“Everyone’s really up for it and we’re definitely backing ourselves to progress to the next round.
“Get down to Belmore for a great night and to cheer us on in what should be a really exciting game against Sydney FC.”
The former NSL giants and ultra-proud Australian Greek club are hoping that a parochial home support will spur Ante Juric’s troops on towards a hopeful ‘Cupset’ against the A-League’s most successful team.
