Coomera Colts Ultimate Guide: Gold Coast minnows have potential to stun

They’re known as the ‘friendly club of the coast’ but Coomera Colts will be dropping the niceties when the Gold Coast minnows step out on the FFA Cup Round of 32 stage for the first time.

The fact that the Gold Coast Premier League side Coomera  - the only club of Queensland’s four representatives that do not play in the NPL QLD - are in the national round at all is a massive achievement.

They are one of the smallest clubs ever to reach the Round of 32 stage, borne out by a long qualifying of campaign of six matches, which kicked with a regional stage clash in March against Virginia United.

Coached by Steve Macdonald, the Colts just kept defying expectations and played out one of the competition's greatest ever comebacks: a 6-5 extra-time win over Redlands United in May after they were 4-1 down.

Coomera sealed their Round of 32 ticket with a 2-1 win over Logan Lightning in June, and now a trip to Magpies Crusaders FC on Wednesday, July 24 awaits for the Gold Coast federations northern-most club.
