Western Australia will see a David v Goliath clash of epic proportions as Kalamunda United face PS4 NPL WA outfit Armadale, a team 11 divisions above them, on Easter Monday.
In a surprising turn of events, Metropolitan League South Division 3 club Kalamunda United have progressed to the fourth round of the Westfield FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds in WA following a forfeit by State League club Rockingham City.
Kalamunda will host PlayStation 4 NPL side Armadale, who play in a league 11 grades higher. It’s unknown whether a team this far down the chain has made it this far in the Westfield FFA cup before, or whether two teams so far apart have ever played each other – let alone whether there’s ever been an upset of this magnitude.
“To be honest, it’s a miracle we’ve made it this far,” said Kalamunda Metropolitan team coach Matt Brydges.
“We didn’t expect to make it past the first round, but now it looks like we’re just trying to make the most of it and enjoy the attention that you don’t normally get at such a low level of football.”
Established in 1969, the match may well be the biggest game in the history of the club. Although Armadale are very heavy favourites to progress, Kalamunda won’t be lying down, and will be looking to make the game a memorable one.
“We entered the Cup for the experience and a bit of a laugh really, and for bragging rights if someone scored against a top opposition club – we’ve certainly got a top club to score against now,” said central defender Chris Kelleher.
Kick-off is at 3PM on Easter Monday at Maida Vale Reserve, Acacia Road, Maida Vale.
