FFA Cup drama! Canberra Olympic keeper's late winner

A stoppage-time penalty from goalkeeper Angelo Konstantinou has sent a 10-man Canberra Olympic through to the semi-finals of the Westfield FFA Cup after a dramatic 1-0 win over Green Gully at Deakin Stadium.

Just as the contest looked headed for extra-time, Olympic won a spot-kick which Konstantinou drilled into the roof of the net to send the home fans into delirium.

Olympic were on the back foot for much of the match and played the last half an hour with 10-men after Adam Rogic saw red.

But they absorbed a stack of pressure applied by the visitors to hold on and then strike at the death to book a fairytale berth in the last four.

In front of a crowd of 2039 in the nation’s capital, the visitors dominated the first half, enjoying the bulk of possession and scoring chances.

Mathew Reid’s glancing header went just wide inside 10 minutes while Liam Boland powerful free-kick was kept out by a combination of Konstantinou and the woodwork.

The home side’s gloveman got down low to keep out Evan Christodoulou’s header just before the break to ensure the sides went to the sheds on level terms.

Boland continued to be Gully’s most dangerous attacking outlet and another free-kick flashed agonisingly across the face of goal early in the second half as the visitors remained on the front foot.

The contest took a twist on the hour mark as Olympic’s Adam Rogic – the older brother of Caltex Socceroo Tom Rogic – was sent off for a second bookable offence after lashing out at Daniel Jones.

Jay Davies was inches away from giving Gully the lead when he made space on the edge of the box to get a curling shot away but it went just wide of Konstantinou’s far post.

Boland forced Konstantinou into another smart save six minutes from time with a header before the Futsalroos keeper had the final say at the other end with an injury-time winner.
