FFA Cup Match Preview: Hume City vs Melbourne City

Hume City and Melbourne City will battle it out to become the first Victorian side to reach this year’s FFA Cup Quarter Finals when they go head-to-head at ABD Stadium on Wednesday night (7:30pm AEDT kick-off).

Both sides qualified for the Round of 16 courtesy of wins over NPL Victoria opposition in the last round, with two strikes in injury time securing a dramatic 3-1 victory for Hume against Port Melbourne, while Melbourne City enjoyed a no-fuss 3-0 win over South Melbourne.

Stoppage-time strikes from Josh Bingham and Nahuel Bonada secured Hume’s passage to the Round of 16 for the third time, and Wednesday’s match will be their fourth against A-League opposition in the competition.

Hume, who go in search of their first ever ‘Cupset’ have no shortage of A-League experience in their squad, with their NPL top-scorer, Josh Bingham, as well as Mark Ochieng, Mitch Cooper and Theo Markelis all having played top-flight football.

Hume’s Round of 32 clash was their first competitive fixture in two months, as the boys from ADB Stadium sat fourth when the 2021 NPL Victoria season was abandoned as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

Conversely, Melbourne City’s season is kicking into full swing, the defending Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s Champions are undefeated two games into the new league season.

Patrick Kisnorbo’s side enjoyed a 2-1 opening-round win over Brisbane Roar but were left frustrated after letting a two-goal lead slip in a 2-2 draw against Adelaide United on Saturday night.

A week prior to the commencement of the new A-League Men season, goals from Connor Metcalfe and Scott Galloway saw the 2016 FFA Cup Winners kick off their cup run with a 3-0 victory over South Melbourne.

Wednesday’s match will be the tenth occasion that the competition has pitted Melbourne City against NPL opposition, and City have come out on top in all nine of their previous meetings with opponents from the second tier.
