FFA Cup Match Preview: Perth Glory v Melbourne Victory

Perth Glory and Melbourne Victory will battle it out for the final spot in this year’s Round of 32 when they go head-to-head in the second FFA Cup Play Off at Marden Sports Complex on Wednesday night (5pm AWST, 7:30pm local, 8pm AEDT kick off).

Wednesday’s match between the sides who finished ninth and 12th in the A-League Men's last season will be played in Adelaide as a result of the border restrictions between Western Australia and Victoria.

Another trip to Adelaide awaits the winner of Wednesday’s Play Off, with a clash against NPL SA Champions Adelaide City looming in the Round of 32.

Both sides kicked off their 2021/22 Isuzu UTE A-League Men campaigns on Saturday night, with a Roderick Miranda header securing a 1-0 win for Victory against Western United, while Glory played out a 1-1 draw with Adelaide United.

Saturday’s match-winner Miranda was one of ten new faces to take the field for Tony Popovic’s new look Victory side on Saturday night.

Glory’s off-season recruitment was headlined by the addition Daniel Sturridge, who debuted as an 85th minute substitute in Perth’s opening day draw with Adelaide.

Australia internationals Brandon O’Neill and Brad Jones were also amongst the new six signings who played their first minutes for Perth on Saturday night.

Wednesday’s match pits new Victory boss Tony Popovic against his former club for the first time since departing Glory for a move to Greek outfit Xanthi in 2020.

Popovic lead Glory to their maiden  A-League Men’s Premiership in the 2018/19 season.

Jason Davidson, Matthew Spiranovic, Chris Ikonomidis and Jake Brimmer who were all part of that Premiership-winning side as well as Nick D’Agostino, who Popovic signed the following season, have all since made the switch from Perth to Victory.

Glory and Victory have previously met three times in the FFA Cup with Melbourne taking two wins and Perth coming away with one.

The most notable previous meeting was the 2015 FFA Cup final which was won 2-0 by Victory thanks to goals from Oliver Bozanic and Besart Berisha.
