FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds to kick off across Queensland

The Magic of the Cup hits Queensland this week as 58 teams from the South East Queensland (SEQ) qualification region, Far North Queensland and Mackay play in 29 matches across the state.

Four teams from the Mackay qualification region kicked off proceedings mid-week as Mackay Rangers FC and Magpies FC played host to Mackay Lions and City Brothers FC respectively last night.

Mackay Lions put six goals past Mackay Rangers to progress to Round 4 of the FFA Cup, while Magpies FC defeated City Brothers 4-1 in their Round 3 clash last night.

Round 2 of the FFA Cup for the SEQ region will kick off this weekend following last weekend’s postponement due to the rain.

Annerley FC and Pine Hills get us underway on Friday night as they host Ipswich City and Mt Gravatt Hawks respectively, while Douglas United head to Atherton Eagles in the Far North for a Round 2 clash.

With so many mouthwatering matches over the weekend, here are just a few of the entertaining clashes set to take place.

Distance Clashes

In the longest distance match of the round, Tallebudgera Valley FC from the Gold Coast region will travel 257kms ground to ground as they take on Gympie United in the Sunshine Coast region this Saturday.

Coomera SC will also travel north to the Sunshine Coast to take on Noosa Lions in the other big ticket coast to coast clash of Round 2, while Brisbane Knights hit the highway to face Nambour Yandina United FC on Saturday.

Teams from the South West get in on the Round 2 inter-zone action when Rockville Rovers and USQ FC make the trip to Brisbane to face Virginia United and Oxley United this weekend, while Brisbane’s relative newcomer Ripley Valley FC kick off their second ever FFA Cup campaign against Gold Coast powerhouse Surfers Paradise Apollo SC at Briggs Road Sporting Complex.

Familiar Faces

Gatton Redbacks will look to upset local rivals Willowburn FC as they host the South West’s reigning Premiers at Gatton Dixon Oval this Saturday.

Reigning Brisbane Premier League (BPL) Champions Albany Creek meanwhile travel to take on rivals Bayside United on Saturday in what’s sure to be a fascinating affair, while Grange Thistle host Centenary Stormers at Lanham Park later that evening.

Is your team missing in action? The 24 SEQ region teams with a bye this weekend will take to the pitch next week when Round 3 kicks off.
