PREVIEW

BLUFFER’S GUIDE

The Mariners are eyeing a fresh start – though they will hold onto their flashy new strip till the Hyundai A-League season kicks off.

The FFA Cup provides the first chance to re-establish their credentials after a poor A-League season. And after an encouraging 3-2 win over the Wanderers last week in a friendly, confidence will be high inside the group.

Having made the semis of the FFA Cup last year, this will provide impetus to right that wrong and go all the way this time.

Phoenix have played a number of pre-season games against local sides in New Zealand but the Mariners will present a different challenge.

WHAT THEY SAY

Tony Walmsley (Central Coast Mariners coach)

“Everything so far has been geared towards the FFA Cup game against Wellington and for me the pleasing thing is that we are in front of where we thought we would be for this part of the pre-season. We’ve definitely put a lot of work into the players that is going to hold them in good stead.”

Ernie Merrick (Wellington Phoenix coach)

"We do need to sign a key striker but I'm afraid we're no closer to that. Everybody in the world wants a goalscoring striker so if you target a player that's got a good record, there's a chance you can't afford him.”
