FFA Cup spot up for grabs in QLD’s coast derby

It will be the Gold Coast up against the Sunshine Coast on Saturday night as two sides battle it out for a spot in the Westfield FFA Cup round of 32.

Palm Beach Sharks take on the Noosa Lions at the Mallawa Complex for Queensland’s final spot in the national competition.

Who could forget the Sharks’ incredible run to the quarter-finals of last year’s tournament?

Palm Beach were one of the real surprise packets, making the last eight where they were beaten by Hyundai A-League club Central Coast Mariners.

They will be banking on that experience to get them back on the national stage this time around.

The Sharks have had to survive a couple of penalty shootouts to get to this stage of the competition, including a nail-biting win over SWQ Thunder in the last round.

The Lions have had their own piece of luck to get within one game of the Westfield FFA Cup.

After originally losing a fourth-round clash to Kawana, they were reinstated after it was found their opponents had played an ineligible player.

Wins over Sunshine Coast Fire and the United Warriors have followed to have them just 90 minutes away from a potential clash with a Hyundai A-League club.

Alex Barlow has scored three goals in the side’s last two rounds of the Cup and will again be a key figure if the Lions are to pull off an upset win over the reigning PS4 NPL Queensland champions.
