The fairytale Westfield FFA Cup run will continue for either Launceston City or Glenorchy Knights following the draw for the last four of the Tasmanian Preliminary Rounds.
The draw for the Semi Finals of the Statewide Lakoseljac Cup has been made with traditional rivals and NPL heavyweights, Olympia FC Warriors and Hobart Zebras set to meet in Semi Final number one.
The two sides met recently on ANZAC Day and played out a closely fought 1-1 draw suggesting there is very little between the two sides and it should be a tight match up again.
There is certainly no shortage of history between the two storied rivals and every time they meet it is a massive, clash, let alone in a Cup Semi Final. It also means that the two sides who pulled off massive upsets in the quarter final stage, Glenorchy Knights and Launceston City now have a path to the final as they were drawn to meet in the second of the Semi Final’s.
For Southern Championship side Glenorchy Knights and bottom of the NPL Launceston City, the Cup is offering both of them an unlikely shot at the national spotlight, with the prized FFA qualifying spot on the line for the eventual Lakoseljac Cup champions.
Both Knights and City would’ve been happy to have avoided the two perceived big sides remaining and draw each other, giving them the best possible chance of claiming the silverware and FFA Cup spot. With Knights and City having dispatched Tasmania’s previous representatives in Devonport and South Hobart respectively on the weekend, Tasmania is now guaranteed to have a new participant playing in the FFA Cup in 2017
