Mariners to wear iconic throwback kit for FFA Cup 2019 clash

No, you’re not seeing things – Central Coast Mariners will be wearing red, white and blue in the FFA Cup this Wednesday.

Central Coast are paying homage to the area’s rich footballing history by launching a retro kit featuring the iconic colours of their predecessors, ‘The Coasties’.

The Mariners will wear the Umbro-made throwback kit – which includes a classic collar and the original Coasties logo on the back of the jersey - for the first time against Brisbane Roar in Wednesday’s Round of 16 clash in Queensland.

It is the strip many representative players from the Coast wore as they launched their aspiring footballing careers, including current Mariners skipper Matt Simon.

“It’s a very proud moment for me,” he told the club website. “It’s paying tribute to my first representative jersey on the Central Coast that I wore in the under 11’s, so it's bringing back some memories and it’s great that the club is paying tribute to the Coasties.

"I’ve always said it’s a privilege to be captain of the club. Being a local boy, for me to be able to represent the region and lead the boys out week-in-week out, I feel privileged for that and I enjoy every minute of it.”

Central Coast junior and first-ever Mariners signing Damien Brown along with veteran Nathan Byrn sported the Coasties kits of 1998 and 1999 to illustrate the similarities - which you can observe below.
