Blacktown City progressed to the FFA Cup Round of 16 with a stunning 3-2 win over the Mariners.

Re-live the Magic of the Cup: Gibbs inspires Blacktown boilover

There’s nothing better in Cup football than when an unlikely outsider manages to knock-off one of the big boys. It’s the true #MagicoftheCup.

And we saw just that in the Round of 32 as PS4 NSW NPL outfit Blacktown City pulled off a ‘Cupset’ by beating Hyundai A-League side Central Coast Mariners.

With more than 1100 fans cramming into Lily Homes Stadium, you could sense something special was brewing on a chilly night in Sydney’s west.

And it was former Hyundai A-League star Joey Gibbs who proved the architect of City’s win.

The former Sydney FC, Wanderers and Jets striker opened the scoring after just two minutes, before Roberto Speranza doubled their lead soon after.

But the Mariners weren’t done, levelling the scores through a brace to the lively Kwabena Appiah either side of the break.

It was turning into a Cup Classic and Gibbs would have the final say eight minutes from time.

Receiving the ball just outside the box, the 25-year-old turned and fired the ball into the bottom corner, sparking jubilant scenes on the pitch and in the stands at full-time.
