Redlands storm past Knights in Cup rout

Ipswich Knights were hit by a second half tidal wave as Redlands stormed to a crushing 6-0 win in the Westfield FFA Cup preliminary round on Thursday night.

In an astonishing 45 minutes, two goals to Elliot Ronto and Graham Fyfe, plus an own goal and another strike by Lyndon Dykes completed the rout at Cleveland Showgrounds.

The result means Redlands will now take on Brisbane Strikers for a spot in the national competition’s round of 32.

Things could have been a whole lot different for third-tier Knights if they converted a first-half penalty.

Mitch Davies was brought down in the box but Dale Robinson saw his spot-kick saved to keep the scores level going to the break.

It didn’t stay that way for much longer.

Just three minutes into the second half Dykes opened the scoring when he turned home Ronto’s cross at the far post.

From that point the floodgates opened.
