Redmayne hails Sydney FC’s derby dominance, Halloran’s rallying cry to Adelaide

The fallout from the FFA Cup Semi Finals continues this week as both Sydney FC and Adelaide United prepare for their Final rematch at the end of the month.

Sydney FC goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne has backed the Sky Blues for more silverware after another dominant showing against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Meanwhile, Siem de Jong discusses his wonderful free-kick and Ben Halloran says Adelaide will do everything they can to bring the trophy to the city of churches.

Here’s the reaction from both camps.

Redmayne hails Sydney FC’s derby dominance

Sydney FC might be on course for back to back FFA Cup trophies, but they probably wouldn’t be in that position without Andrew Redmayne.

The 29-year-old gloveman made several fantastic stops to prevent an early Wanderers onslaught in last Saturday’s Semi Final against his former employers.

According to Redmayne, Sydney FC have got their fierce rivals worked out.

“We understand how much it means for the fans and we thoroughly enjoy moments like these,” Redmayne told Sydney FC’s official website.

“We enjoyed it, we’ve really got the wood on them I guess.

“I think we were under a bit of pressure but that’s football. It was the old cliché of a game of two halves and I think we dealt with the pressure in the first half and put them under pressure in the second.”

Redmayne and Sydney are targeting what would be a fifth trophy in three years against the Reds later this month.

As well as their FFA Cup 2017 title, Sydney FC's formidable spell of dominance includes back to back Hyundai A-League Premierships and the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 Championship.

The Sky Blues goalkeeper says they’re in a good position to prolong that superiority thanks to another terrific off-season of recruitment.

“The recruitment Sydney FC do is I think the best in the league,” Redmayne continued.

“You look at the boys we’ve brought in, they’ll just continue to get better and better once they learn from each other and the squad as a collective learn the movements and passes they like.

“It’s just a fantastic group of boys, fantastic belief in the change room, we just go in to every game believing that we’re going to win it."

De Jong: ‘I was pretty sure I was going to take it’

Siem de Jong’s stunning free-kick against the Wanderers wasn’t a bad way to open his Sydney FC account.

And for the Sky Blues marquee, it was reminiscent of another successful strike from the dead ball during his days in the Holland U21 team.

“When the free kick came on that spot I was pretty sure I was going to take it. It was a good spot for me so I was allowed to take it,” told Sydney FC’s official website.

“The last time I scored a free kick was two years ago, in a similar position, in one of my first games back in Holland for the U21 team to get minutes in.

“I haven’t taken a lot in between but it was a good one to get in, especially putting us 2-0 up, I think it really helped get the win."

Sydney FC have boasted a host of strong free-kick takers in recent years – including former defender Jordy Buijs and new signing Jop van der Linden – and Steve Corica’s side can add the 29-year-old Dutchman to a growing list of options from the dead ball.

Halloran says Adelaide are deserved FFA Cup Finalists again

Ben Halloran was plying his trade for FC Heidenheim when Adelaide were conquered in last year’s FFA Cup Final.

But after returning to Australia in August for the first time since 2013, the Cairns-born speedster might just be the trump card Marco Kurz’s men need to exact revenge on the Sky Blues.

Halloran helped book Adelaide’s Final ticket with a tidy close-range finish in the team’s 2-0 win over Bentleigh Greens last Friday and now could be in line to win the first senior football silverware of his career.

“What better way to start the season than into a cup final,” Halloran told Adelaide United’s official website.

“Credit to the boys, I think we put in a pretty good performance out on the pitch.

“And I think we deserved to make the Final. We want to win it, it’s silverware and it’s massive for the club to win the FFA Cup.

“And we’re going to do everything we can to win it.”
