Road to the FFA Cup Final 2018

772 teams entered the FFA Cup and now only two remain. Adelaide United and Sydney FC will renew their rivalry in the FFA Cup Final 2018, to be held at Coopers Stadium on 30 October, in a rematch of the 2017 decider.

In a competition that has seen its fair share of giant killings this season, two of the best teams in Australia will battle it out for the Cup – but it certainly hasn’t all been smooth sailing.

Sydney needed extra-time in their quarter-final game against NPL side Avondale FC, while Adelaide United had to survive a trio of scares on their way to the final – including a scrappy 1-0 win over Lions FC in the Round of 16.

They say defence wins trophies and Adelaide will certainly be hoping that is the case. Adelaide United are yet to concede a goal in the FFA Cup so far and have bagged eight themselves on the road to the Final.

Sydney FC, on the other hand, will hope that their unstoppable force can overrun Adelaide’s immovable object. The Sky Blues have notched 13 goals in just four games. Sydney FC will be without the competition’s top scorer, striker Trent Buhagiar (4), out with an injury, but their duo of international stars, Siem de Jong and Adam Le Fondre, will offer United a staunch test.

Whichever team wins on 30 October, history will be made. With one FFA Cup apiece in their trophy cabinets, Sydney FC or Adelaide United will become the first club to win the competition twice, which launched in 2014.

Sydney will also be looking to go one better by becoming the only side to defend the FFA Cup title, having won the competition last year. They were also defeated in the 2016 finals.

Adelaide lifted the trophy in the first year of the competition with a 1-0 win over Perth Glory. United will be hoping for a similar result and will be boosted by the fact that they will be playing at home – the same venue as their previous triumph in 2014.

With one game left, all eyes will be on Adelaide as one team looks to make history.
