Round of 16 wrap

Adelaide City 1

(Costa 43)

Brisbane Strikers 0

Adelaide City continued their Westfield FFA Cup run with a 1-0 win but were denied a larger victory by Brisbane Strikers goalkeeper Michael Turnbull.

The former Standard Liege and Roma gloveman made a string of brilliant saves to deny numerous City players at Marden Sports Complex but the home side triumphed thanks to Anthony Costa's opportunistic strike in the shadows of half-time.

Turnbull produced a sharp save to deny Nick Budin, who powerfully headed Joel Allright's 42nd-minute free-kick on target, but Costa pounced, stabbing the ball into the net.

Costa had earlier hit the woodwork from 30 yards and almost made it 2-0 just after the break only to be denied yet again by Turnbull.

The visiting goalkeeper - a former Australia international - claimed last week he had knocked back a contract with a Bundesliga club in the hope of playing in the Hyundai A-League, and the 33-year-old did his hopes no harm with a man-of-the-match performance in Adelaide.

Despite that, Turnbull was unable to help the Strikers into the Westfield FFA Cup quarter-finals, with his opposite number Ryan Veitch also making a couple of top stops as City advanced in front of 2,024 spectators.

To add insult to injury, the visitors had defender David Salin sent off in the closing stages for a second bookable offence.
