Sibling rivalry ignites Cup clash

It’s set to be a real family affair for Peter Triantis when he steps out onto the Edensor Park pitch tonight to face Sydney United 58 FC in the Westfield FFA Cup round of 16 (kick off 7:30pm).

Triantis will relive plenty of backyard scraps as he comes face to face with his older brother Chris, with the pair on opposite sides for what is the headline act of this round of the Westfield FFA Cup, and Triantis set to upstage his sibling idol.

“The sibling rivalry has been discussed very heavily at home,” Triantis said.

“We had a bit of a get together yesterday and I think the problem is the family is all going for the older brother and not me so it should be a great contest tomorrow.

“Growing up, he’s 5 years older than me, I looked up to him and he taught me a lot. We’ve got a big family and we always had a good go at each other in those family 5 v 5’s and I think it will be no different tomorrow.”

There’s set to be familiar faces all around the pitch with a number of Sydney United players having previously represented Sydney FC, claiming the Foxtel National Youth League title in the inaugural 2008/09 season.

“I think I’ve played with about eight or nine of them who are now ex-teammates,” Triantis said.

“My best mate I’ve grown up with for 12 years plays there (Theo Kofinas) and my brother also and I know how much they’re looking forward to this.

“They’ve been training for about 4 weeks just for this game so they’re going to definitely be up for it and we’ve got to match that intensity and let our football win us the game.”

Triantis stressed the importance of the cup competition, with the young midfielder setting his sights on taking out the inaugural competition as the Sky Blues are heavily backed to progress to the next round.

“Not only is it preparation for the season but it’s a cup and the inaugural competition and we would love to win it,” Triantis said.

“We’ve got the chance to progress and we might be favourites but we know it’s going to be a very tough game and we want to go as far as we can in this competition.”

Gates open at 6:00pm for a 7:30pm kick off in the final matchday of the Westfield FFA Cup round of 16.
