Sydney FC end Blacktown's FFA Cup run

A ruthless Sydney FC has ended the dream Westfield FFA Cup run of Blacktown City with a comfortable 3-0 quarter-final win on Wednesday night.

First half goals from Filip Holosko and David Carney put the Sky Blues in control before marquee man Bobo capped an excellent starting debut with a third 13 minutes from the end.

Bobo was a standout for Graham Arnold’s side, setting up the first two goals to go with his poacher’s finish as Sydney booked their spot in the last four of the Cup for the first time in their history.

More than 3700 fans were at Sydney United Sports Centre to see if PS4 NPL NSW club Blacktown could pull off a Cup shock but the Sky Blues put a dent in those hopes inside 13 minutes.

A poor giveaway by Mitch Mallia just outside his own box gifted possession to Bobo, whose inch-perfect cross to the far post was finished off by Holosko.

It was soon 2-0 to the visitors with Bobo again playing a significant role.

Some brilliant combination play ended with Rhyan Grant’s cross finding the Brazilian, who cushioned a header into the path of Carney who crunched an unstoppable first-time volley into the corner of the net.

Blacktown went within centimetres of pulling one back on the stroke of half-time but Mallia’s powerful shot struck the post.

It was a rare scare for Sydney FC, who went back to dominating the contest after the break.

Milos Ninkovic scuffed a great chance on the hour mark to make it 3-0 after a driving run by Holosko, while the impressive Bobo saw a volley flash across the face of goal soon after.

But Bobo got the goal his brilliant display deserved on 77 minutes, arriving in the six yard box at the perfect time to tap in Michael Zullo’s centre.

Blacktown star Danny Choi failed to have an impact on the match but tried his luck with another long-range stunner, but Danny Vukovic did enough to get back and keep out his audacious effort from inside his own half.

But it was the Sky Blues' night as they remain on course for the season’s first piece of silverware after an emphatic display in Sydney’s west.
