Eight teams remain; four cherished spots in the Round of 32 of the Westfield FFA Cup are the ultimate prize. Four massively anticipated David v Goliath clashes are another reason to believe in the fairytale magic of the FFA Cup in Victoria.
Here's the scenario for Victorian fans over the coming weeks.
After the draw for the final round of qualification for this year’s Westfield FFA Cup this week, all four of the state’s remaining PS4 NPL clubs avoided each other in the draw.
That means they will face lower-tier opposition to make the round of 32. This means a few Cup fairytales could play out. Or some local giants will power on.
Final Round Victorian Qualifiers details
- South Melbourne v Frankston Pines – Wed June 17
- South Springvale v Oakleigh Cannons – Wed June 17
- Hume City v Kingston City FC – Wed June 24
- Heidelberg United v Goulburn Valley Suns – Wed June 24
The excitement levels are reaching fever pitch across the state as the prospect of facing Hyundai A-League teams in the Round of 32 reaches the ultimate stage.
One of the more tantalising ties sees ex-NSL club South Melbourne up against state league outfit Frankston Pines.
It would be a huge story for Pines to topple South, currently third in the NPL, and they have already taken care of NPL opposition to get to this stage.
Pines pulled off a massive upset to dispose of Massimo Murdocca’s Avondale 1-0 on Sunday and will need to produce just as a courageous performance to defeat Chris Taylor’s South.
Last year’s giant-killers South Springvale will need to come up with another fairytale after being drawn against Oakleigh Cannons in a blockbuster local derby.
South Springvale – who eliminated NPL opposition at this stage of the competition last year – are always tough to beat at Warner Reserve.
The other two fixtures see NPL high-flyers Heidelberg United host Goulburn Valley Suns, while Hume City take on Kingston City.
