Australia Cup 2023 Round of 16 - Matchday 3 Preview

Tuesday night provides some exciting action in the Australia Cup Round of 16, with some of the form teams of the competition featuring. 

Clubs from across the country are set to take the stage, and a lot of them are in a fine scoring mood. 

Melbourne Knights FC v Campbelltown City SC

Melbourne Knights take on Campbelltown City at Knights Stadium after both teams put on a show last round. 

The hosts battled to an emphatic 4-1 victory over Queensland Lions in the Round of 32, with explosive forward Gian Albano notching a double. 

Melbourne will also look to lean on the experience of former Socceroos defender Ivan Franjic who was instrumental in seeing the NPL Victoria outfit advance. 

The Knights have finished their league season in fourth, concluding with a narrow 3-2 defeat to fellow Round of 16 entrants Heidelberg United. 


Campbelltown City pulled off the shock of the Round of 32, knocking out reigning champions Macarthur FC 2-1. 

An early goal either side of halftime from Shogo Yoshikawa and Antoni Trimboli had the NPL SA runners-up 2-0 up - a lead they managed to hold onto.

No challenge seems too great for City in the Cup, having already taken down A-Leagues opposition, so they’ll be eager to advance into the quarterfinals.

Both teams come into this one with momentum in this competition setting up a thrilling clash on Tuesday night. 


Western Sydney Wanderers FC v Adelaide United FC

Western Sydney Wanderers play Adelaide United in a tense A-Leagues battle at Marconi Stadium. 

The Wanderers made light work of NPL WA’s Floreat Athena, flying to a 6-1 victory in the Round of 32. 

Debutant Lachlan Brook stole the show scoring five goals in a dream introduction to football for the attacker at Western Sydney. 

It will be another special occasion for Brook on Tuesday night, facing his former side.  


United put in a professional showing in the Round of 32 with an early goal from Craig Goodwin and a late one from Zach Clough seeing them through against Northcote City. 

The teams offered plenty of excitement in their A-Leagues meetings in 2022/23, producing a 4-4 draw before Adelaide snatched a 3-2 win. 

This promises to be another exhilarating fixture on Tuesday night, with goals to be expected. 


MetroStars FC v Inter Lions FC

NPL SA champions MetroStars host FNSW League 1’s Inter Lions at T.K. Shutter Reserve after both sides smashed in the goals in the Round of 32. 

MetroStars dismantled Inglewood United 5-0 last round, with star forward James Temelkovski scoring a first-half double. 

They kept the pressure on in the second period as Fabian Barbiero scored a stunner, while Scott Nagel and Michael Cittadini also got in on the act. 

That win was their eighth in a current ten-game winning streak, seeing them come into this one with the most impressive recent record out of any team in the Cup. 


Inter Lions put in a similarly spectacular performance in the Round of 32, battering NorZone Premier League league leaders Hellenic Athletic Club 6-0.

There were braces for Owen Duke and Oliver Green, with Sam Armson and Thomas Quilligan adding further to the scoreline.

The Lions are also in some great form, having finished their league season with four straight victories. 

These teams are producing some of their best football right now, making it a big clash on Tuesday night.
