Australia Cup 2023 Semi-Finals - Review

The 2023 Australia Cup Final 2023 is set after two thrilling clashes in the semi-finals on Sunday.

Sydney FC reached their fourth Cup final before Brisbane Roar made it through to their first.

Melbourne City FC - 1 (Jamie MACLAREN 89’)

Sydney FC - 2 (Patrick WOOD 38’, Joe LOLLEY 73’)

A goal in each half saw Sydney FC edge past Melbourne City at AAMI Park, getting up 2-1 in the early kick off to make it through to the Australia Cup Final for a fourth time.

The sides played out a frantic first period as the Sky Blues struck the woodwork twice while the hosts peppered their opponents’ goal.

Sydney snatched the lead with seven first-half minutes to play as Patrick Wood raced down the right and lashed a fierce effort into the roof of the net for his fourth of the Cup.

The visitors added a second after the break with Joe Lolley curling in a stunner from the right edge of the box that nestled in the left side of the goal 73 minutes in.

Jamie Maclaren latched onto a stray backpass to slot home and halve the deficit in the 89th minute, but Steve Corica’s team held firm to earn their place in the big dance.

Brisbane Roar FC - 1 (Thomas Waddingham 18’)

Brisbane Roar battled to a 1-0 victory over Melbourne Knights at Knights Stadium for a shot at Cup glory.

Melbourne Knights nearly got off to the dream start 13 minutes in when former Roar fullback Ivan Franjic skimmed the crossbar from outside the area.

Five minutes later, teenager Thomas Waddingham continued his fine scoring form in the Cup, sliding in to give the visitors a halftime lead.

Brisbane continued to probe in the second half, and just after the hour mark, some brave goalkeeping from Knights’ custodian Chris Oldfield prevented them from finishing off the game.

The side saw out what remained to claim the other final spot and a maiden shot at Cup glory.
