FFA Cup wrap: three more clubs edge closer to Round of 32

The race to the FFA Cup Round of 32 is heating up, with three more Preliminary Rounds matches played around Australia on Tuesday night.

From South Australia to Queensland and the Top End, three more teams took another giant step towards qualifying for a shot to play on the national stage.

Here's a wrap of the results around the country on Tuesday night.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

A late winner from Allan Welsh ensured NPL club Adelaide Comets edged past State League 1 outfit Cumberland United 3-2 after an enthralling clash at Adelaide Shores Football Centre.

Welsh struck in the 89th minute to complete his brace and secure passage to the final preliminary round fixture in SA.

It's there the Comets will face the winner of  Wednesday night’s encounter between Modbury Jets and Croydon Kings at Coopers Stadium.

The Comets, who needed a penalty shootout victory to advance past Adelaide City last round, are currently fourth on the SA NPL table.

QUEENSLAND

A double from Dean Briggs guided Peninsula Power to a 4-0 victory over Ipswich in their fifth-round clash at Sutton Park.

Briggs was heavily involved throughout the contest and had a hand in laying on a quick-fire double for Sam Cronin before claiming a brace himself to give the Power an unassailable 4-0 lead at half-time.

The Redcliffe-based club will now take on NPL QLD’s Brisbane Strikers in their sixth round fixture next Tuesday, May 30 at AJ Kelly Park.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

Hellenic Athletic Club defeated University Azzuri 2-0 in their round five fixture at Darwin Football Stadium.

Hellenic face Palmerston Rovers at the same venue in round six on Tuesday, June 5.
