Glitter Strip epic! Sharks win FFA Cup shootout 12-11

The Gold Coast has hosted an extraordinary Westfield FFA Cup clash after Palm Beach Sharks defeated Broadbeach United 12-11 in a shootout on Tuesday night.

The Sharks prevailed after a gripping 120 minutes ended 3-3 at Nikiforides Park in the Westfield FFA Cup preliminary rounds.

In terms of Westfield FFA Cup theatre it rivals the incredible 6-6 draw in the recent Sunshine Derby which also went to a shootout.

Bedlam! FFA Cup's 12-goal Sunshine Derby spectacular!

Broadbeach will be ruing a huge missed opportunity as they led 2-0 with less than 20 minutes left after second half goals from Justin Watmough and Adam Powell.

Powell’s goal was a moment of pure class.

The defender had the ball on halfway and noticed the Sharks ‘keeper off his line, lobbing Ryan Meskell with a cracking long-range effort.

But the Sharks, Westfield FFA Cup quarter-finalists last year, came storming home.

Ethan Grimley pulled one back with 17 minutes left before Daniel Grzic popped up with a vital equalizer in the final minute.

Broadbeach regrouped and went ahead again seven minutes into extra-time but again they failed to hold on as Nik Mirkovic’s low shot snuck in with eight minutes left to force a shootout.

Unfortunately for Powell, his stunning strike in regulation time was forgotten as he missed both of his spot-kicks as the Sharks won an epic 12-11.
