Gold Coast sides dominate in Round 3 of the FFA Cup

Round 3 of the FFA Cup took place in South East Queensland over the weekend with 25 teams entering their names into the draw for Round 4 of the competition.

With many interesting match-ups taking place from coast to coast, it was the Gold Coast teams that impressed the most, winning seven of their nine fixtures against Brisbane and Sunshine Coast-based clubs.

With two coast battles taking place, Palm Beach SC – who made a 522km round trip to face Gympie United – won their match 7-4, while Robina City were also successful on their travel to the Sunshine Coast, beating Buderim Wanderers FC 4-1.

Surfers Paradise Apollo, Broadbeach United SC, Burleigh Heads SC, Nerang SC and Coomera picked up victories for the Gold Coast against Brisbane-based teams – it was only Runaway Bay and Musgrave who failed to win – they were defeated by Toowong FC and The Lakes FC respectively.

Nerang didn’t have it all their own way however; it took extra time and penalties to see them past Slacks Creek SC, after a late brace from Greg Gourley nearly sent Slacks Creek through in their place.

The Sunshine Coast region registered mixed results, as their clubs battled their way to three victories in their seven games against Brisbane sides. Of those who took to the park, it was Beerwah Glasshouse FC, Maroochydore Swans FC, and Woombye FC who progressed from the region.

Local match-ups also took place – Redcliffe PCYC breezed past neighbours Brighton Bulldogs 4-0, Logan Metro dealt out a heafty punishment to fellow City of Logan rivals Jimboomba United FC, and Kinscliff Wolves FC got the better of Southport SC in a tight 1-0 affair.

The cameras were down to watch another local match-up, as Grange Thistle took the game to fellow Brisbane side North Pine in a 5-0 triumph, after initially going into the break 2-0 to the good.

It wasn’t just Brisbane and the two coastal regions hosting FFA Cup action over the weekend – Toowoomba-based Willowburn FC are also heading into Round 4 of the FFA Cup after posting an impressive 1-0 victory against a resilient Kangaroo Point Rovers.
