Northern NSW clubs one win away from FFA Cup national round of 32

Broadmeadow Magic, Newcastle Olympic, Weston Workers FC and Coffs City United are within touching distance of a place in the national round of 32 after advancing to the seventh preliminary round of the FFA Cup on Saturday.

Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility hosted the four sixth preliminary round matches, with the opening fixture between Belmont Swansea United and NPL NNSW side Weston on Saturday morning.

The Bears downed the HIT106.9 Northern League One club 1-0 thanks to Jarryd Sutherland’s ninth-minute goal.

The upset of the day came in the first afternoon match when North Coast Football representatives Coffs City United eliminated NPL club Lake Macquarie City on penalties in a thrilling contest.

Coffs City, who lead the Coastal Premier League competition, took the lead on 25 minutes thanks to Jamila Oke.

Lakes equalised just before the hour mark through Shukurani Sunzu and then edged in front seven minutes later through veteran striker John Majurovski.

Lakes were four minutes from a place in the seventh round only for Martin Kelleher to equalise for Coffs City.

The match went to extra-time, with Chris Dooley giving Coffs City a 3-2 lead five minutes into the second half.

Lakes though refused to quit and, four minutes into added time at the end of extra time, Lakes’ Carter Smith made it 3-3 to send the game to a penalty shootout.

It was a perfect set of penalties until Lakes’ Nick Charlesworth failed to score with his effort, allowing Coffs City to advance to the seventh preliminary round.

Broadmeadow then comfortably dispatched Mid North Coast Football representatives Port Macquarie United 8-0 in the second afternoon match.

Jeremy Wilson opened the scoring for Magic before Mitch Rooke and Sam Walker scored hat-tricks. Jake Harris added an eighth as Broadmeadow advanced past the Coastal Premier League club.

Newcastle Olympic then downed NPL rivals Lambton 1-0 in the feature match on Saturday night thanks to a first half goal from Jed Hornery.

Olympic will now take on Coffs City United at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility in their seventh preliminary round clash on Monday, while Broadmeadow will host Weston with match details to be confirmed at a later date.

Winners of the two seventh preliminary round matches will represent Northern NSW Football in the FFA Cup national round of 32 draw on 7 July.
