Sydney United 58 secure progress after stoppage time mayhem

No, you were not dreaming – two of Australia’s grandest old clubs really did just play out one of the craziest finishes to an FFA Cup match you’ll ever see.

New South Wales heavyweights United 58 were 5-3 victors after extra time in their Round of 32 thriller against St George on Wednesday night.

But the final score line does not reflect a topsy-turvy 90 minutes of action at Rockdale’s rain-soaked Ilinden Sports Centre.

Having gone two-nil up via Josh Macdonald – who scored the FFA Cup’s 550th goal, United 58 were cruising towards a spot in the Round of 16 until St George made it 2-2 via Musashi Kokubo and Marcus Beattie.

Yianni Perkatis then scored what appeared an almost certain winner with a 93rd minute header, only for Kokubo to pounce on an error from United 58 ‘keeper Thomas Manos and force extra time.

From there, the Reds proved too strong for their second-tier opponents and ran in goals from ex-Western Sydney Wanderers youth Tariq Maia and 17-year-old Michael Ruhs to bring a true FFA Cup classic to a close.
