Third time's a charm as City buck Cup trend with 3-0 win over Wellington

The reigning A-League Men’s premiers showed their class, earning their place in the Australia Cup quarter finals on Sunday afternoon.

Melbourne City made their way through downing Wellington Phoenix in rather convincing fashion.

Melbourne City FC – 3 (Tolgay ARSLAN 37’, Jamie MACLAREN 76’ 78’)

Wellington Phoenix FC – 0

Melbourne City put in a solid showing, defeating Wellington Phoenix 3-0 at Jack Edwards Reserve.

The hosts took a lead into half time courtesy of a fortuitous deflection from Steven Ugarkovic’s volley that bounced off Tolgay Arsan and looped into the net.

City continued to cause Wellington problems in the second half, adding a further two goals through star attacker Jamie Maclaren.

The Socceroo first snuck a clever finish inside the left post 76 minutes in before firing one into the roof of the net a couple of minutes later to confirm City’s place in the next round and end a streak of two successive Australia Cup exits at the hands of Wellington.
